| The Compaq company was founded in 1982 by three former Texas Instruments employees. The Compaq name was taken from the phrase "COMPatibility And Quality". Compaq is known as one of the first makers of IBM compatible computers, the Compaq Portable, one of the precursors to the modern laptop. In 2002, Compaq merged with the Hewlett-Packard company, and its products and laptop parts are now sold as a brand name for HP.
Compaq's modern laptops use a typical 6-Cell Lithium-Ion battery. Lithium-Ion batteries are the most common choice in laptops, as they have a high power to weigh ratio. This means that they can provide more power for less weight than previous technologies. Compaq laptop batteries, and Lithium-Ion batteries in general, also have no "memory effect". The "memory effect" refers to a flaw in earlier laptop battery technologies in which batteries would lose capacity if they were not charged and discharged completely every few weeks. Not fully discharging the battery would result in shorter battery life, as the notebook battery could no longer be charged to its full capacity. Compaq laptop batteries do not have this problem, though manufacturers still recommend fully discharging and recharging a battery once every few months for optimal battery health.
Although Compaq is now merged with HP, its innovations and solid laptop design continue. Its new laptops sport high-definition LCD screens, a wide variety of connectivity options, and excellent warranties with 24x7 support. |
