| Compaq laptop LCD screens come in a variety of sizes, resolutions, and configurations. They range in size from around 8.9" up to 17.3" for some of its larger models. Most of Compaq’s older laptop models used matte screens, which tend to reflect less light, reducing eye strain for the user. In the last few years, Compaq laptops have incorporated clear glossy screens, which have the advantage of brighter colors, deeper blacks, and a more vibrant image. However, glossy screens tend to reflect more light, and therefore are not ideal for bright rooms or outdoor use.
Compaq laptop LCD screens come in a wide variety of resolutions, from 1024 x 768 (often referred to as XGA) up to 1600 x 900 (referred to as WXGA++) for larger models. LCD screen resolution is usually dictated mostly by screen size, as the number of pixels that can be fit into a certain size of screen is limited. Therefore, larger screens can accommodate higher resolutions.
Most Compaq laptop LCD screens use a liquid crystal display which is powered by a TFT active matrix. The TFT active matrix is what allows each liquid crystal to change color in order to display an image. Since the crystals themselves do not emit light, a backlight is necessary. Compaq LCD screens use either a CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent light or an LED (light emitting diode) backlight, depending on the model.
