| Gateway was founded in 1985 in an Iowa farmhouse, and became most recognizable in 1991 with the introduction of its "spotted cow" boxes. Since then, Gateway has becoming a leading PC maker, combining advanced technology with great customer support.
Gateway's laptops include the newest technologies and fastest speeds while still maintaining affordable prices. Some of its technological advances are in the area of notebook batteries. Modern Gateway laptop batteries feature lithium ion cells. Lithium ion is the modern laptop battery standard due to its excellent energy-to-weight ratio. Weight is a primary concern for any laptop or notebook battery, and lithium ion provides more power for its weight than older Ni-Cad or Ni-MH batteries. Gateway laptop batteries and Lithium ion batteries in general, also have no "memory effect", as did older battery technologies. The memory effect was an undesirable effect in which batteries would lose some of their capacity if not fully discharged every few weeks or less, resulting in reduced battery life.
It is important to note that even the most efficient Gateway laptop battery will only contribute so much to the "battery life" or time between charges. So much of notebook battery life depends on the hardware itself, especially how much power is consumed and at what rate by the hardware components. By reducing the speed and energy usage of hardware components, longer battery life can be accomplished. This is particularly evident in Gateway's series of Netbooks. These are small, lightweight notebooks with above-average battery life and portability, at the sacrifice of some speed and performance. When combined with efficient six-cell lithium ion laptop batteries, the reduced power consumption of Gateway's netbooks allows for 5 or more hours of battery life on some models. For buyers who need portability and the ability to work for longer periods between charges, netbooks and their highly efficient and portable batteries may be a worthwhile tradeoff for performance when their use is primarily web, email, and office applications. |
