| HP laptop LCD screens use some of the newest technologies available in laptop design. One such feature is LED backlighting. While many laptops, especially older models, use a CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight, many of HP’s modern laptops use a newer technology called LED (light emitting diode) for a backlight. LED backlights are brighter and more energy-efficient than previous technologies, and provide longer battery life and less energy usage. Many configurations of HP laptops are Energy Star certified, and the lower power consumption required by LED backlighting contributes greatly to their certification.
Another modern technology included in HP laptop LCD screens is HP’s BrightView technology. BrightView uses a glossy screen, which has the advantages of clearer picture, brighter colors, and deeper blacks. The disadvantage of glossy screens is more reflected light, which can distract the user and cause eye strain. With BrightView, the screen is treated with a non-reflective layer similar to a matte screen, but more advanced. Therefore, BrightView screens combine the best benefits of a glossy screen with the anti-reflective capabilities of a matte screen.
HP laptop LCD screens come in sizes from 8.9" up to 18.4" measured diagonally. Small models support a WSVGA resolution of 1024 x 600, and the largest screens support a WSXGA+ resolution of 1680 x 1050 for extremely high definition. Each screen uses a TFT Active Matrix for color switching and either a CCFL backlight, or an LED backlight.
