| Laptops were made to be portable, but all laptops need to be recharged from time to time. AC adapters are the connection that make recharging possible, while also saving battery life when plugged in. Early AC adapters were simply cords, but later were upgraded to converters outside of the machine, eliminating the need for an internal converter. This made the laptops much thinner, and much more portable.
Laptops come with their own AC adapters, and usually they are for a specific brand or product. However, additional adapters are available from the manufacturer or third-party resellers for those who need to replace a bad adapter, or who would like to have an extra adapter to carry in a laptop bag.
When shopping for a new AC adapter, you don't necessarily have to stick to the same brand, but you do need to make sure that you get one of high quality, and one that is compatible with your laptop. For instance, check the user reviews to see if there have been any problems with the model you're thinking of buying. If you notice any complaints of fire, or malfunction, then it's probably a wise idea to stay away from that particular model and go for something that's a little more reliable.
Another issue to consider is the length of the cord. Sometimes the generic replacement adapter will appear good, but the cord will be incredibly short, making it almost unusable for sitting it in a corner and charging your laptop. Because of this, sometimes it's best to buy your new AC adapter in person, thought that isn't always possible.
You do of course have the option to order your new adapter from the original manufacturer or a trusted third-party reseller, which will often be under warranty, allowing for more peace of mind. This also ensures you have a compatible adapter, avoiding any headaches involved with returns. |
