Laptops would be nothing without portability, and the number one necessity for portable power is a battery. Laptop batteries work by a chemical reaction controlled by the laptop's hardware itself. Because the reaction is controlled by the laptop, you're able to often check the status of the battery on the laptop itself, making it very convenient. When the reaction occurs, energy flows in a certain way, but when your ac adapter is plugged in, the process goes in reverse, causing the battery to charge so that it can be used again. A laptop battery can be recharged, on average, up to 750 times, though recent batteries contain a new material for Lithium Ion batteries that will allow them to be recharged up to 1,500 times.

There are essentially three types of laptop battery, though only two are generally used today, there his the Nickel-Cadmium(NiCad), Nickel-Metal-Hydride(NiMH), and Lithium Ion(Li-Ion). Nickel-Cadmium had some issues with memory (batteries would not fully recharge), so it's not widely used anymore, and though NiMH is still used in some laptops, it is rare as Li-Ion batteries will last longer.

Now that you know what type of battery you're looking for, there is the inevitable question of used or new. There are some who might argue the economics of purchasing used, but common wisdom says that you should buy new. The main reason being that new batteries can charge 750 times, and used batteries have likely been charged and recharged already, shortening the lifetime of the battery. Thus, you want your battery to charge as much as possible, and avoid any other issues that might arise from using someone else's leftover battery.

The last issue to consider is battery capacity. While many manufacturers only have one size and type of battery per laptop, others have a "high-capacity" battery that can be purchased as an option, allowing longer battery life in between charges.
