Sony's VAIO series of laptops are considered by many to be the height of design aesthetics in the Windows world. This attention to detail and design shows in every aspect of a VAIO laptop, from its sleek case to its gorgeous screen. Therefore, it should be no surprise that Sony extends this design aesthetic to its laptop keyboards as well.
Modern Sony laptop keyboards come in many sizes and designs. Many of Sony's laptops incorporate a "chiclet" style keyboard, where each key is slightly separated from the other. While this design may be more about aesthetic appeal than usability, it still functions very well and is easy to type on.
One of Sony's greatest innovations in keyboard design is its P series of ultraportable notebooks. The P series notebook has an 8" screen, making it one of the smallest notebooks available anywhere. Fitting a useable keyboard into an extremely compact notebook such as this one was certainly a challenge, but Sony managed to accomplish it quite well. Though smaller than full-size keys, the keyboard is still very easy to use, and most users are able to type at nearly their full typing speed, despite a slightly more cramped keyboard. Though many keys had to be left out of the design to fit the smaller available space, nearly every necessary function has been retained with the heavy use of a function switch, which allows many keys to do double-duty, controlling more than one function.
Sony has a reputation for quality and aesthetic appeal that has remained for many years with its laptop lines, and each component, including the keyboard continues to meet that high standard. |
